BRIEF
Project Description:
The Barcelona Air Routes Development Committee (BARDC – CDRA) was created in 2005 with the objective of promoting and coordinating the development of new intercontinental routes from Barcelona Airport. Driven by the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and AENA, the Committee was created to align institutional efforts in favor of Barcelona’s international air connectivity.
Its mission is to position Barcelona Airport as a European hub of reference, attract new long-haul routes, recover strategic connections and ensure that the development of aviation contributes to the economic, business and tourism objectives of Catalonia.

GPA methodology applied:
Since its creation, GPA acts as the Technical Secretariat of the CDRA, providing strategic, analytical and operational support on an ongoing basis. GPA prepares technical studies and business cases for new routes, evaluating their financial, operational and market feasibility, and maintains a direct and permanent relationship with airlines and airports worldwide.
It also coordinates strategic and commercial agendas, organizes institutional missions and sectoral events, and leads the preparation of the CDRA’s Strategic Plan, which is updated every four years. This plan identifies priority passenger and cargo routes to be recovered or developed, and defines the actions needed to achieve this. GPA has also developed advanced business intelligence tools, such as a Power BI dashboard with key KPIs to support data-driven decision making.
Results of the
project:
The CDRA has established itself as a reference model for institutional cooperation in Spain and Europe. Thanks to GPA’s long-term technical support, the Committee has contributed to a five-fold increase in intercontinental passenger traffic at Barcelona Airport, attracting new airlines and long-haul routes, and reinforcing Barcelona’s global visibility as one of Europe’s most dynamic airports in terms of international connectivity and economic development.
